Saalbach-Hinterglemm's Skicircus is a single connected circuit — you can ski all day without repeating a run, starting in Saalbach and finishing in Leogang via Fieberbrunn. The circuit is almost entirely north-facing, so snow quality holds well even in warm weather.

Published 2026/27 walk-in day and week rates for a skis+boots+poles set at Check In Saalbach (Sport 2000) at the Schattbergbahn. Booking online cuts up to 20%, and Saalbach's single-day prices sit above the Alpine average - a week works out far cheaper per day (the 4-star week is €192, about €27 a day).
By air, Salzburg (SZG) is closest at about 90 km / 1-1.5 hours by car; Innsbruck (INN) is roughly 150 km / 2 hours and Munich (MUC) about 180 km / 2-2.5 hours. By train, the nearest station is Zell am See (about 20 km); from there Postbus line 260 runs up the Glemmtal valley to Saalbach and Hinterglemm in around 30-40 minutes.
The valley has two bases: Saalbach at the east end and Hinterglemm 4 km west. Pick a shop by your base and home lift - Schattberg X-press, Kohlmais or Bernkogel if you stay in Saalbach; Reiterkogel or Zwölferkogel if you stay in Hinterglemm - so you can walk to the gondola in ski boots. The free ski-bus links the villages, but you don’t want to carry gear between them daily, so rent locally and use a shop’s overnight depot.

A one-day set is dear, but week rates and '7 days for 6' deals (Hansi's, Intersport) drop the effective daily cost to roughly €25-40.
Rent at your home lift
Choose a shop at the gondola you start from - Schattberg X-press or Kohlmais in Saalbach, Reiterkogel or Zwölferkogel in Hinterglemm - and use its overnight depot so you never carry skis on the ski-bus.
Kids often ski cheap
Children's sets run about €14-25 a day and Bründl gives under-16s 50% off; some ski schools (Heli's) bundle skis, boots and helmet for little ones from age 3.
Match gear to 'The Challenge'
If you plan the big circular tour, ask for a sportier 5-6 star all-mountain set - you'll ski 65 km and 12,400 vertical metres in a day, so demo-level skis and well-fitted boots pay off.
Walk-in 2026/27 rates for a full skis+boots+poles set run about €38-42 a day at budget shops (Ski Rent Discount, Hervis, Rabbitsport), €46-54 a day mid-range (Heli’s, Intersport, Sport 2000, Hansi’s) and €55-60 for premium gear at Bründl. Booking online typically cuts about 20%, and a week costs far less per day - Sport 2000’s published week rate is €192 for a 4-star set, about €27 a day.
Rent in whichever village you sleep in - they are 4 km apart and both have full lift access to the same Skicircus. Saalbach shops cluster around the Schattberg X-press, Kohlmais and Bernkogel gondolas; Hinterglemm shops sit by the Reiterkogel and Zwölferkogel lifts. The free ski-bus links them, but renting locally saves lugging gear.
Yes - in Austria poles come with the skis at no extra charge. Note that ski boots are usually priced separately from the skis on a shop’s list (Hansi’s, for example, charges €31 for skis and poles and €23 for boots), so always check whether a quote is for the full set.
Many shops at or near the lifts (Check In Saalbach and the big Bründl store among them) offer a heated overnight depot, so you can store skis and boots by the gondola instead of carrying them back to your accommodation.
For Christmas, New Year and the February half-term weeks it is wise to reserve online - you lock in the 20-50% web discount and guarantee your size and model. Outside peak weeks you can usually walk in, especially midweek.
Beginners do fine with an entry set (4-star / 'Economy' / 'Comfort') - softer, shorter, forgiving skis that turn easily on the area's many blue runs above Hinterglemm's Reiterkogel and Saalbach's Kohlmais. Most shops let you swap up a category free once you progress.
